The Ahr river has its source at western edge of the Ahr Hills and over the course of millions of years the river has carved a near vertical slice through the Rhenish Slate Mountains. In the middle Ahr region the valley is narrow and the banks are steep – this is where the wine region begins with sun-washed terraced vineyards on the southern slopes. The Ahr valley is Germany’s most northern red wine area and with just about 550 hectares, it is also the smallest. The region is best known for its red grape cultivation and we have selected a fabulous, award winning producer in this region, Meyer-Näkel.
