VDP. Grosse Lage designates the very best vineyards of Germany, within which the finest areas have been narrowly demarcated. With their site-specific characteristics, their wines are particularly expressive and have exceptional ageing potential. They are planted with traditional grape varieties that are best suited to the particular site, as determined by each region.

The steep vineyard slopes have up to a 45% gradient and the vines benefit from the long hours of sunshine due to the southwest exposition. The vineyard also has an elevation of 150 to 250 metres above sea level. The soil is a stony conglomerate of slate and greywack with a high percentage of stony loam. It is these attributes that characterise the VDP Grosse Lage Silberberg.

Fully ripened grapes were harvested at the end of October 2016 with a yield of 25 hl/ha. Grapes were then gently pressed in barrique (French oak barrels made from 70% new oak) for about 16 months.

Meyer-Näkel 2017 Silberberg Spätburgunder Grand Cru dry wine is clear on the nose - it has tobacco, peppery, blackberry, dark floral and mineral notes. On the palate it is juicy and fruity, with smoky, spicy and slightly nutty notes and hints of cocoa. This Spätburgunder has fine tannins, a salty minerality and a good, persistence, yet delicate acid bite.
