Wine: This Spätburgunder (German Pinot Noir) is pure, fruity and concentrated. Aromas of sour cherries and black berries fuse with juniper, Mediterranean herbs, cocoa and pepper to form a complex bouquet. This red wine's flavour lingers on the on the palate, showing a very fine tannin structure and a firm long-lasting finish with fresh acidity.
Vineyard: In Walporzheim, the Ahr valley starts to narrow. The hillsides become steeper and are shaped by terraces, which support the vineyards' long standing reputation for being one of the best in the region.
The name of the vineyard dates back to the Romans, who settled near Walporzheim and cultivated wine and herbs in the Kräuterberg because of the optimal climatic conditions.
The soil consists mainly of slate and greywacke decomposition stone. The steepness and the intense direct sunlight create a nearly Mediterranean microclimate. The wines are powerful, with a rich bouquet and herbal aromas.
Vinification: Old vines, sustainable vineyard work and consistent yield reduction form the basis of this wine. Carefully hand picked grapes produced a yield of around 30 hl/ha.
The grapes were then transported to the winery and gently pressed. After two days maceration time on the mash, the wine was aged in barrique French oak barrels (made from 70% new wood content) on the fine yeast for 18 months. The wine was bottled unfiltered and stored for six months.
