The WineBarn would like to express our deepest sympathy for those affected by the severe floods in the Ahr region of Germany. Intense rainfall led to rivers bursting their banks. The unprecedented rise in water caused devastation - over 150 people were lost during the tragedy, many people are still missing, homes were demolished and businesses ruined. The main business in the Ahr Valley is wine and almost all wine estates, or what is left of them, are located more or less in the immediate vicinity of the river, so have been badly affected. The VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter), which is Germany’s association of elite wine producers and a guarantee of quality, have created new classifications for Germany’s sparkling wines (Sekt). There are two standards of sekt - VDP.SEKT and VDP.SEKT.PRESTIGE.
