Kranz 2020 Ranschabach "Rotliegend" Riesling QbA dry white wine

Kranz 2020 Ranschbach "Rotliegend" Riesling QbA dry

Regular price £21.55

"Smells 'grainy', like pear skin. Wonderful stone dust and salty limes and cumin dust. The wine shows real flinty clench, shaped into flint-carved edges. Amazing focus and precision for a village-level wine, and the fruit is wrapped around a remarkably strong, powerful spine. Racy but so intentional. This is punching above its weight." / Tamlyn Currin @ Jancis Robinson / 16.5 points

Site: The era of the Rotliegend was a time of intensified of volcanic activity. The Rotliegend volcanoes mainly produced quartz porphyry in the form of lava flows. In this era it was very hot and dry, the red colour of the soil still shows this and is due to iron compounds that were formed in this climate. The pressure of overlays of clay silt and loose sand created a solid rock, which is geologically know today as the "Rotliegende". The vineyards in this area are very steep.

Wine: Dry, wonderfully lively Riesling, spicy, juicy, salty, stony mineral notes, straight, direct, precise.

Harvest: Extremely selective manual harvest.

Vinification: Gentle processing of the grapes, controlled fermentation, stainless still tanks.

Food recommendation: This dry white wine pairs perfectly with seafood, oysters, scallops, fried fish and poultry dishes.
